1996

After about 25 years of intensive service, the RABDe 12/12 "Mirages" trains needed an overhaul. The "decommission and acquire new" versus "complete overhaul" debate resulted in Revision 4, which was carried out by AP Zürich between 1995 and 2001.

It was important that, during the conversion, trains with both the original and modified control systems could run in multiple-unit operation. In addition to technical changes and innovations, such as complete rewiring, noise reduction in passenger compartments, improved driver’s cabs, electric windshield wipers, halogen headlights, etc., the passenger compartments were designated as non-smoking, and the interior of second class was updated to match NPZ standards, while first class was upgraded to match DPZ standards. The existing folding doors were replaced with yellow outward swinging doors, and the two middle entrances in the end cars were merged into one wide entrance. In the middle car, the central entrance was completely removed, and the luggage door was automated. The toilet was removed and replaced with a disabled compartment. This made the vehicles ready for another 15 to 20 years of service.

The trains are renamed RABDe 510 000 - 017.

Unit RABDe 510 010-2 had to be scrapped after a collision with RABDe 510 013-6 on February 23rd, 2001, in Effretikon. One of the rear cars was used to repair the other damaged train.

Gradually, these trains are replaced by more modern rolling stock. Their last runs were on the S14, S16, shuttle service between Wald and Rüti, and on the S24 from Zurich HB to Horgen-Oberdorf. With the delivery of the second series of RABe 514 trains, the SBB decided to retire the "Mirage" from commercial service in early 2008. A small official farewell ceremony took place on December 9th, 2008, at Zurich "Museumstrasse" station.

The "Mirage" trains were planned to alleviate traffic congestion between Lausanne and Geneva. After this idea was abandoned, no further use was planned. The "Mirage" trains were decommissioned on March 24, 2009, and the last one was scrapped on July 22nd, 2010. Unfortunately, none of the trains were preserved for posterity, except for one driver’s cab, which is located in front of the “DSF” association’s entrance in Koblenz.

NB: Their successors, the RABDe 8/16 "Chiquitas", ended their service earlier than expected, and the "Mirages" outlived them by many years.
