The Be 4/6 is the first electric locomotive of the SBB CFF FFS. It started service in 1920 and for many years was the main locomotive for passenger trains on the Gothard line, between Lucerne and Chiasso.

The company asked for a locomotive capable of pulling 300 tonnes passenger trains at 50 km/h and 300 tonnes freight trains at 35 km/h on a 26 ‰ slope.

Even if less powerful than the Be 5/7 of the BLS, the CFF decided to order 12 locomotives in 1918 (n° 12303 to 12318). Following the success registered by the first locomotives delivered, 2 new batches have been ordered (n° 12319 to n° 12'328 and n° 12329 to n° 12342).

3 locomotives are still preserved today: n° 12320 (CFF Historic), n° 12332 (Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne) and n° 12339 (Swisstrain).
