2002

The number of coaches in the Bmz 21-91.0 series increases as more and more Bmz 21-71.0 coaches are upgraded to reach 200 km/h maximum speed during the ÖBB "Upgrading-Programm".

The ÖBB "Upgrading-Programm" lasted from 2002 to 2010. Nearly all ÖBB long-distance coaches were modernised in that time, including most of the Eurofima Bmz 21-71.0 coaches. From 2002 to 2005 and due to cost reasons, most coaches get a new grey livery and a modernised interior but not all are upgraded for a maximum speed of 200 km/h. From ~2005 onwards, all coaches modernised in the ÖBB "Upgrading-Programm" are upgraded for 200 km/h maximum speed. Also, most (but not all) of the earlier modernised cars are upgraded for 200 km/h maximum speed during this later phase.

April 1st

A few days earlier than initially intended, the ÖBB carriages were deployed for the first time in the Benelux service by NS (Dutch railways). Due to technical problems, the carriages were not deployed the following days. Among the issues encountered, the doors were relatively easy to open during and after central closing. The issue is fixed by installing the TB0 system ("Türblockierung ab 0 km / h"). In addition, the ÖBB coaches are more likely to suffer from problems with air conditioning than the ICR coaches.
